DENTAL CHAIRS, 19th century
An American dentist named Dr. Josiah Flagg invented the first dental chair in 1790, with a wider armrest and an adjustable headrest. He modified a Windsor writing chair for use in his practice.
More than forty years later, the first reclining dental chair was invented in 1832 by London dentist James Snell, a folding armchair equipped with a mirror to illuminate.
In 1868 James Beall Morrison creates a chair that allows a slight lateral inclination to facilitate the work of the dentist. In 1871 (SS White Co.) appears a chair for dentists made entirely of metal that could be modified in height through a crank.
In 1877 appears the first hydraulic chair designed by Basil Manly Wilkerson, which allows a better position of the patient’s back during interventions and improves working conditions.
