Diphtheria is a life threatening disease that affects the nose, throat and tonsils ๐Ÿ‘ƒ and is very contagious. The highest number of deaths reported in a single year in Australia was 898 in 1921. Due to immunisation in Australia, it has virtually disappeared. Outbreaks still occur in countries with low vaccination rates.

The diphtheria vaccine is part of the National Immunisation Program and is provided free of charge for all children ๐Ÿง’ aged 2, 4 and 6 months of age with booster doses at 18 months and 4 years of age, and Year 7 students as part of the School Immunisation Program ๐ŸŽ’
